When approaching this sequel, everyone’s mind is on relevance, and Hocus Pocus 2 wastes no time addressing it head-on. It accomplishes this by developing a narrative that, unlike its 1990s predecessor, which logically opted to focus on the youngsters as the central perspective for that movie, centers more on the notorious sisters and their bond with one another. The story centers on three students, Becca (Whitney Peak), Izzy (Belissa Escobedo), and Cassie (Lilia Buckingham), who are tricked into bringing back the Sanderson Sisters for them to complete their plan to rule Salem and then the world while eating a child or two along the way. Despite the movie’s familiarity and slight nostalgia, the plot succeeds in bringing the conflict of the past into the present. Small plot twists and turns involving several new and returning characters are woven throughout this story. Their performances add to the already satisfying performances of Parker, Midler, and Najimy as Winifred, Sarah, and Mary Sanderson. This movie does a great job of balancing the young women’s point of view against the similarly functioning coven of the Sanderson Sisters, allowing for an additional layer of emotional depth that mostly pays off in the end.
