“It Lives Inside” marks director Bishal Dutta’s feature debut in the supernatural horror genre. The plot centers on Sam, an Indian-American teenager who inadvertently releases a demon that thrives on her former best friend’s loneliness. Sam must embrace her Indian heritage to defeat it. The film’s premise shows promise but ultimately falls short, delivering a rather derivative and safe horror experience. Nevertheless, it remains a watchable and moderately entertaining movie, largely thanks to Suri’s strong performance as Sam. Bajwa and Gabriel also contribute compelling supporting roles with emotionally layered scenes. Dutta succeeds in creating a creepy atmosphere that builds tension, even if the scares are somewhat hit-and-miss. While the film’s representation of Indian culture is commendable, it doesn’t succeed in delivering the spine-tingling chills it aspires to, relying too heavily on jump scares that become more annoying than terrifying.
